41-year-old righty Miguel Batista got crafty, got energized, dug down deep and saved his rotation spot with a fine effort on May 14 that included seven innings of four-hit ball. “I think if it was somebody other than Miguel Batista, but I’ll bet you he can tell you that this is not the first time in his career that he knows that someone, that guys were waiting to get healthy,” New York Mets manager Terry Collins said in an MLB.com report, referring to the fact that the pitcher knows there are at least three other athletes bearing down on his job. “Miguel Batista has pitched way too long in this league, in both these leagues, with all the experience that he has.” Despite Batista’s fine effort, the Mets’ rotation is about to get quite crowded with Chris Young slated to return by the end of the month, and several up-and-coming prospects lighting up the radar gun at the Triple-A level with the Buffalo Bisons

NEW YORK, May 14 (UPI) — New York’s Miguel Batista baffled the Brewers on four hits over seven shutout innings Monday in the Mets’ 3-1 triumph over Milwaukee. Batista (1-1) was dominant in his second start since replacing Chris Schwinden in the pitching rotation, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out five. Tim Byrdak and Bobby Parnell combined for a scoreless eighth inning but closer Frank Francisco had to survive a rocky ninth to collect his ninth save

The New York Mets are preparing to make a long-term offer to keep David Wright in Queens, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal that cited “a baseball official briefed on the team’s thinking.” Wright, 29, is leading the National League with a .400 batting average and a .489 on-base percentage, and is third in the NL with a 1.080 OPS. The Mets have a $16 million team option on Wright for the 2013 season, but after losing Jose Reyes to the Marlins during free agency last winter, the Mets will be eager to sign Wright to a long-term deal and avoid the necessity of trading him after the 2012 season. According to the Journal report, no decision has been made on the timing of the offer or the size of the contract, as Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is still in the process of assessing Wright’s value.
